And what exactly is a ‘Swipe File’?
Basically its a collection of already successful Direct Mail Copy (i.e. sales letters), Order Forms, Lift Letters, Flyers, Marketing Materials, Classified Ads from Newspapers and Magazines, Web Sales Copy, email Copy etc which are related to the kind of products you are offering yourself (or planning to). Or copy which is aimed at the same target market as your own.
Indeed, you should gather any material that has spurred you to action, whether its purpose was to get you to buy something or just leave your name and email address. Copy the good stuff and study it.
Yep, sounds BORING doesn’t it. Collecting other people’s successful copy … a chore! But it just happens to be one of those ‘Boring’ little things I was talking about which will make you richer … and quicker … than you would be if you don’t keep a Swipe File.
And you will learn to view it as one of your Secret Weapons…
In fact, owning a Swipe File is a secret weapon to many Millionaires who make their money, as I do, by offering small niche products to targeted groups of people.
Its especially valuable when creating your own copy whether you’ve never written a single word before yourself or you are the world’s greatest copywriter. Indeed a swipe file is at the heart of all great copywriters.
I know you probably don’t realise this at the moment, but a swipe files is actually an incredibly useful tool. Every major player I know in this business offline and online keeps a swipe file … and for good reason.
It makes producing ‘winning’ copy a very easy thing to do enabling you to put together an Ad or letter very quickly.
You see everybody gets stuck for words and ideas at some point. Actually I do with every single project I work on. So when this happens it’s good to have an example of past successes to go to. It doesn’t just inspire you … and freshen your creative juices and get the words flowing again … but in nearly every case you can simply adapt already successful copy for your own project.

I recently bought a swipe file from an American copywriter. She had done what I have just described above for about 5 years. She had all the top sales letters and ads for most of the big USA marketers.
It was something I paid her over $10,000! Now I know what you’re probably thinking, ‘are you mad Reynolds’ … $10,000 for some boxes of paper!!
Well though I can’t deny it seems crazy on the surface of it to pay $10,000 for what most people would probably consider junk mail, you’ve got to bear in mind that a single cash on demand sales letters can bring me on over £1/2 MILLION POUNDS … a letter I will probably get inspiration from in this swipe file.
